Stick

The hockey stick has changed significantly over the years. The modern stick is a one piece composite that is light, strong and flexible. Improvements in the stick have allowed players to seek gains in accuracy, puck velocity, shortened time to shoot and deception.

Player

The modern player should understand the loading of the stick (building tension) and the release of the tension (transfer energy into the puck). Using the P2X Shotwatch, those phases are measured and a player can assess their shot and seek improvements, either in technique or more appropriate stick selection.

Data

The first step to improvement should be the measurement of current performance. Below is a measured shot with the phases indicated. Shooting a hockey puck is complex and players should have multiple ways in which they shoot. With the data provided players can baseline their shot and seek measured improvements, both in the time taken to shoot and the produced puck velocity.

A: Load Time: Measured from time zero to time of max pressure.
B: Release Time: Measured from time of max pressure to end of acceleration.
C: Shot Time: Measured from time zero through end of acceleration; A + B = C.
